I convinced myself to push past the fear of starting a blog, but my next big hurdle awaited:

Picking my domain name

Being a graphic designer, I’ve got a lot of experience creating logos and branding. So I know its a pain in the butt to have to re-brand. I didn’t ever want that hassle. I wanted to make sure I picked a name I could roll with for years.

I needed something that quickly but as thoroughly as possible explains ME and my blog. I chose to be a “lifestyle blog” mainly because I don’t have the kind of brain that can just stick to one topic or “niche”

You’ll read a lot of bloggers saying you have to pick a niche to be successful, but I don’t agree.

Most of the posts that got a big reaction on my personal Facebook page fell into a couple categories. Humor, parenting, real-raw-truthful-imperfect stories, and projects I completed around the house or for my graphic design business. So those were the topics I wanted to focus on with my blog.

When I get overwhelmed with a ton of thoughts and ideas in my brain, I crave a physical pencil and notebook to write with. I’ve got a lists app on my phone for everything else, but at my most creative points, I need to actually physically write.

So I took to my notebook and started brainstorming. It was a pretty fast process, which was very surprising to me. I just wrote down a bunch of words that I thought described me and what I wanted my blog to be about. Here it is:

In true creative mess fashion, sunshine colored all over it.

Then, I needed to make sure the name was actually available

I got really lucky and CreativeMessMom was available on ALL platforms. Except Instagram, it was available but for some reason got flagged. During my back and forth with them trying to get it reinstated, they started replying in Spanish, so… We’re still working on that.

And there it was. I became Creative Mess Mom.

It felt right. It describes our crazy, messy, creative life. It describes me. My best quality – my creativity, my big struggle – the house, life, writing, all messy, and who I identify as most often in life – Mom.

Of course, The Daddy had to go and get all clever on me when I was feeling down about myself and my ability to balance everything in our lives. He created my second little slogan: “Sometimes you get the CREATIVE, Sometimes you get the MESS”

He doesn’t think of himself as the creative one, but he’s got it in him too.

I registered my domain name through Bluehost.com

Free blog hosting sites are great, but if you’re hoping to make money at some point with your blog: self-hosting is what you’ll need. They made the process pretty understandable and offered a live chat support team for all my million questions.

If you’re a blogger, how did you come up with yours?

If not, what would you choose if you had to come up with a domain name?
