My Inexpensive “Farmhouse” Styled Shelves

August 1, 2019

I got these shelves off Facebook marketplace about a year ago and neglected them all this time.

I knew I wanted something light with a farmhouse look, but I DON’T spend much money on decorating my house. I can’t tell you the last time I paid full retail price for decor (unless you count the dollar store).

So, I sorted through a bunch of things I knew I had around the house already, took a quick trip to the dollar store, and used a couple cans of spray paint to achieve exactly what I wanted.

The result:

I loved it! And when I posted about it on my Facebook page, it seemed everyone else did too 🙂

Words of affirmation is my love language, so it always feels nice when I do something that gets great feedback. Unless someone is actually complimenting me face-to-face, then I just get awkward and don’t know how to respond 😆

The bottom shelf is for displaying the kid’s artwork. These dollar store picture frames should do the trick!

Now obviously buying everything new would be pricey. So I thought it would be fun to break down where everything came from so you can see that it was super cheap to do.

If you don’t have an old dish set from your Grandma sitting around like I did, the thrift store is a great place to keep an eye out for dishes.

You can even use a little spray paint as long as you’re using them for decoration only. Mine will probably still be used on occasion, so no painting!

I’m a bit of a glass jar/bottle hoarder, which came in handy for these shelves. I also got those gorgeous aqua Ball jars from a friend.

There’s actually a lot of family represented on these shelves, it makes me smile. The white dishes are a mix of sets I got from both of my Grandmothers.

The wine corks are some of mine and also from a big ton of crafting stuff I got after my Aunt passed away.

The potted aloe plant (with a fake succulent to keep it company) is from my wonderful sister in law, and another large jar decorated with lace is from our cousin’s wife on my husband’s side.

The big candle is actually the unity candle from our wedding on top of a crystal candle holder also from my aunt. And the smaller candle is from my sister.

The rest is from the thrift store or dollar store. The copper basket with wine corks was a pink plastic dollar store basket. The potted purple flowers are from the dollar store and chalk spray-painted in chiffon white. I also ended up making some decals for them to give them a more “Rae Dunn” look.

Yes, I’ve changed a few things around already and added two little fake potted succulents from Dollar Tree.

I love my shelves! I’m really happy with them. 😊

Now here’s to hoping the kids don’t break everything right away.

After about two hours of working on these the rest of my house looked like a bomb went off. Of course, that’s not the picture that got posted on Facebook though, so I’ll share a glimpse with you.

This is AFTER most of the art supplies were picked up and the dog licked up most of the leftover peanut butter on the table. Don’t ask about the socks, honestly I have no idea.

There you go! A little creative and a little mess

And I’ll leave you with another little decor project I’ve done recently. It’s in our guest bathroom. It took Marvel about a week before he got brave enough to ask,

“Ok, so I’m not great a reading cursive, but does that sign in the bathroom say NICE BUTT?!?”

Yes, Son, Momma’s weird.
